There is a different myofascial stretch for all major muscles of the body
What is Myofascial Stretching?
Myofascial stretching is the targeted stretching of a muscle within its fascial chain. This type of stretching uses the physiology of the muscles and fascia to cause effect on joint mechanics. The traditional type of stretching most of us are familiar with typically only stretches out the muscle itself. Myofascial stretching, on the other hand, differs in many ways.
Myofascial Stretching:
Myofascial stretching stretches and strengthens at the same time
Let’s circle back to the key point that myofascial stretching is a mindful and active stretch. That’s right, you’re not relaxing into the stretch and hanging out in that position. You’re doing work - hard work! This is why myofascial stretching is not only much more challenging, it’s also incredibly more effective in the results seen. Unlike passive stretching where you’re relaxing into the stretch which only gives short-term relief, myofascial stretching provides permanent change and re-lengthening of structures.
Who knew stretching could cause you to break a sweat?!
Benefits of Myofascial Stretching
Who can benefit from Myofascial Stretching?
Everyone! Most people often focus on strength while flexibility is neglected in their training. However, in order to move optimally, our body needs a certain amount of flexibility and range in order for strength building to safely occur.
Everyone can benefit from myofascial stretching!
During myofascial stretching, your body may shake while holding the pose. Some of you may even break a sweat. This is because myofascial stretching is hard work! With this type of stretching, multiple parts of the body are being used to create more space and bring about permanent change.
Though myofascial stretching is still relatively new, it’s highly effective. Its increasing popularity can be seen across a number of different types of sports.
